Philip Cavendish

Philip Cavendish is a Senior Lecturer in Russian Literature and Film Studies at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London.  His particular interests lie in the poetics of visual style, the creative role of the camera operator, the relationship between technology and aesthetics, and the phenomenon of the “photo-film” in Russian and Soviet cinema.  He is currently researching the development of color in Soviet cinema during the 1930s and 1940s.  His most recent monograph, The Men with the Movie Camera: The Poetics of Visual Style in Soviet Avant-Garde Cinema of the 1920s, was published by Berghahn in 2013.
